Unlike her family and most monsters, she did not see this world as a prison.Instead, she saw the beauty and hard work that the other monsters invested into making the underground their home, their safe place which they've built into a happy community in order to cope with being betrayed by the humans. Her experiences in the underground began to shape her own perceptions, she found interest in the darkness, a beauty that her parents could not see.. as well as the rest of the monsters, which despite their attempts at finding happiness within the underground they kept holding on to the hope of being free one day to rejoin the surface, which made Layla feel guilty. She internalised her enjoyment of the underground as something that was not shared and loved by many, how could she love a prison? Monsters were damned down here, imprisoned against their will, it's only right they claim back their freedom.
She did not entirely hate the idea of leaving, but she was afraid of what live could be like on the surface once and if freedom arrived. Would she even be able to fit in after being used to the darkness?Her father, Algar Sage, a veteran of the war against humans, held strong beliefs and harbored a deep-rooted grudge against them, he hoped that every single day they'd get closer and closer to freedom.. and just then, they can claim back what was rightfully theirs as well, the right of enjoying and basking in the light of the rest of the world. This is why he did not agree with Layla's beliefs, he thought that just like everybody else she should be looking forward freedom and not enjoy a prison. How could anybody do that? It was beyond him. His constant criticism and vocal opposition tothe siren's ideas only fueled Layla's fears and insecurities and each day Layla kept more and more to herself, unsure of how others would react to her unique perspective.
Her mother, Adrianne Labelle, was a bit softer on her about it, but she always avoided bringing up the subject thinking it would just cause more tension within the family.Unable to handle the tension any longer, Layla mostly keeps to herself and spends her days out in the middle of the waterfalls' rainfalls. She secretely uses the glowing crystals embedded into the walls and echo flowers' petals to build jewelry that she carries with herself at all times and hides away in a specific place where nobody could find them. Maybe one day, if she does decided to give the surface a shot.. she'd bring them with her, to carry a sweet memory of her oldest home.
